Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan looks just as ridiculous as it should
Developed by the studio behind Bayonetta and Wonderful 101, this upcoming action title proves the comic book silliness of TMNT works just right for videogames.
Here's a factoid: for a while, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was the second-highest-grossing independent film ever made. It's come a long way from those comic-book-and-New-Line-Cinema days, but it's nice to see that Mutants in Manhattan, the new game being developed by Bayonetta studio Platinum Games, is drawing upon that oldschool look more than the computer-animated show or the new movies. The thick-lined cel-shaded models might put you in mind of Borderlands or a Telltale game, and they definitely suit the outrageous cartoon-y nature of talking anthropomorphic reptiles (arguably, much more than Michael Bay's self-serious films).
While Mutants in Manhattan shares a few characters with the upcoming film (the embarrassingly gritty-sounding Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows), their designs are much closer to their 80s roots. In the trailer below, you can see Rocksteady and Bebop, best remembered from their appearance in the 1980s cartoons, souped-up but still gloriously ridiculous and neon. Look at Bebop's hot pink hair and yellow shutter shades! Plus, there's a bipedal shark. It is actually impossible to go wrong with a bipedal shark.
Platinum has done licensed games before, like the recent Legend of Korra, which received middling reviews. The swift, sharp four-on-one hack-'em-up gameplay seems like it should suit the adolescent reptilian assassins, though, so we'll see where this goes. At the very least, Platinum has definitely nailed the look on this one.
