"This song is comfort food for me! From just hearing the first few
seconds, my mood is lighter. I love how the melancholy lyrics are
paired with the bubbly production, and the whole thing ends up being
upbeat. Especially when I'm working, I like to listen to music like
this, that makes me feel good. If I'm relaxed and mellow, I'm in a much
better space to draw. The songs on this playlist all do that for me,
and are some of my all-time favorites."
General Public - "Tenderness"
"I love the '90s!"
Ms. Lauryn Hill - "Doo Wop (That Thing)"
"I often rap the first verse of this (probably very badly). On the venn diagram of my favorite music, songs from the '90s and female R&B singers have a big overlap in the center."
Starchild - "Relax"
"This song is a combo of music that I love: it's breezy, mellow but still dance-y, electro-y R&B pop. And it's amazing."
Janet Jackson - "Got 'Til It's Gone (ft. Q-Tip & Joni Mitchell)"
"This song is perfect to me. I love how it flows, and how the Joni Mitchell and Q-Tip parts meld so well with Janet's."
The Notorious B.I.G. - "Juicy"
"This fits in the sweet spot of '90s R&B that I'm really into, and the optimistic message of it makes me happy (so does the Sega Genesis shoutout)."
MGMT - "Electric Feel"
"Something not from the '90s! I love the mesmerizing sound of this, the airy vocals, and the euphoric feeling of it overall."
Dolly Parton - "Jolene"
"I grew up with a serious dislike of country music, which was the opposite of my dad, who grew up listening to it on the farm. I think Dad was happy when I fell in love with this song a few years ago."
TLC - "Diggin' On You"
"This whole album is awesome, but this song is my favorite. The laid-back groove of it is warm and comforting - reminds me of summer and the beach."
Beyoncé - ***Flawless (ft. Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche)
"I'm a huge Beyoncé fanboy. She actually inspired my take on Thor, especially the confidence she exudes and the way she carries herself. I love how she embodies strength and femininity at the same time, and I try to incorporate that into Thor. This song in particular sums up that attitude and confidence - it's empowering. I love the quote about feminism and equality in the middle too. That resonates a lot with me, especially in regard to Jane taking over the mantle of Thor. Also, I woke up like this."
Whitney Houston - "It's Not Right But It's Okay (Thunderpuss Mix)" [4:16 version]
"I totally bust out my Whitney-Oh-No-You-Didn't finger wave for the big note at the end of this."
Ghostown DJs - "My Boo"
"After a couple more aggressive tracks, we'll close out with a mellow, '90s dance groove that I love so, so much. This was my jam as an 11 year old, and it still is!"
